The Question: What does the term "wet blanket" mean?

What exactly does the term wet blanket mean? I have just started to hear this term used, and I'm sure its been around a long time. Does it mean ride a lot till the blanket gets wet with sweat? Does it mean put wet blankets on the horse? Does it mean just ride a lot?

The Answer

Howdy,

"Wet blanket" or "wet saddle blanket" is a term that's been around a while. When someone says something like, "This mare dances around when I get on her... " someone else will reply with "She just needs a few wet saddle blankets!" Basically the person is saying that the horse needs to be ridden hard until the bad behavior is ridden out of her.

Of course, whether or not "wet saddle blankets" will fix a problem depends on the problem itself. If the horse is misbehaving because she's young, green and/or inexperienced, she may just need to spend some time being ridden and get more experienced. If she's misbehaving because she's in pain, the source of pain needs to be found and fixed or if she's misbehaving because of training problems then someone needs to retrain her.
